NYS BLACK, PUERTO RICAN, HISPANIC, AND ASIAN LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS RELEASES STATEMENT ON JURY VERDICT IN DANIEL PENNY TRIAL

“We cannot address the mental health crisis with a mindset of instant gratification. Our solutions must uphold civil rights and due process under federal and state law while tackling the urgent need for effective, long-term care for all New Yorkers.

The jury's verdict underscores the persistent issue of dehumanization that Black New Yorkers and individuals grappling with mental health challenges face in the justice system. Continual underfunding and neglect of our mental health infrastructure have led to preventable tragedies, including the death of Jordan Neely.

While recent budgets have shown progress, much work remains to repair our failing systems. The Caucus is committed to strengthening mental health infrastructure, providing comprehensive services, and creating safer communities for everyone.”
