(VALLEY STREAM, NY)- Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages, Assembly Deputy Majority Leader, releases a statement on U.S. Senate’s decision to reject the AI moratorium included in the GOP Bill.
“Today’s vote by the Senate to reject the proposed AI moratorium, which would have enacted a 10 year ban on state AI regulations, is a critical win for states rights and the 10th amendment. This is about making sure everyday people have a say in how artificial intelligence shapes our jobs, schools, and communities.
We can’t pretend AI is a distant future. It is already deciding who gets hired, who qualifies for a loan, and how kids are screened at school. If we don’t set clear, fair rules now, we risk letting hidden algorithms discriminate and harm people without accountability.
That is why I am sponsoring Assembly Bill A8884 here in New York to ensure we have strong state-level protections so AI is transparent, unbiased, and used responsibly. No one should lose an opportunity, be denied housing, or be unfairly targeted because of an unchecked system.
This vote shows that states must keep the power to protect our neighbors when Washington drags its feet. I am grateful to everyone who raised their voices to keep that power where it belongs — to the people.”
