BLACK, PUERTO RICAN, HISPANIC, AND ASIAN LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS RELEASES STATEMENT STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS PROGRAM RULING

NEW YORK, NY – In light of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Biden v. Nebraska,  Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages, Chair of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus, released the following statement:

"The members of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus stand united in advocating for student debt relief. We continue to support the Biden Administration’s goals to bring relief to borrowers and address a parasitic system.

Once again, the Court illustrates a chilling ability to conflate the intentions of Congress and subjugate the people to its will. It is concerning that the same Court, in Trump v. Hawaii, recognized emergency powers granted by Congress to suspend entry from predominantly Muslim nations but now deems those powers inadequate for providing much-needed relief to those in need. We agree with Justice Kagan that her colleagues in the majority are usurping the role of Congress and the executive branch in making policy.”
