Caucus Chair Releases Statement Regarding Trump Administration's "Saving College Sports" Order
We’ve just barely made it through the first six months of Donald Trump’s second term, and his administration is now targeting the rights of our young athletes, " said Assemblywoman Michaelle Soalges, Chair of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus. A newly drafted order, ironically dubbed “Saving College Sports”, will limit the amount of compensation student athletes can receive from “Name, Image and Likeness” (NIL). If the finalized order is even remotely similar to what we are seeing now, the reimbursement these athletes receive will be inadequate than they are at this very moment. What’s worse is that these athletes will no longer be recognized as employees by the teams they are playing for, but instead as independent contractors. This only further limits the legal rights of these young individuals by making them more vulnerable in these workplaces. This order has been delivered to the American people under the guise of protecting our young and vulnerable population, but will certainly prove detrimental to the future of the athletes that these sport institutions depend on”.
