Caucus Chair Solages Releases Statement on Potential Exclusion of Immigrants From Census

“Every ten years, the U.S. Census fulfills a constitutional duty to count every person living in this country. Trump’s push to exclude undocumented immigrants from this process is blatantly unconstitutional and part of a coordinated effort to disenfranchise marginalized communities.

We’ve seen this strategy before in places like Texas, where extreme gerrymandering has been effectively used to silence these communities. Now they’re trying to manipulate the census itself to erase their opposition from holding any ground on the political map.

This is why New York must take the census seriously. By building out our state’s census office & coordinating local outreach, we can ensure that our Immigrant New Yorkers are accounted for. This is not the time to sit back; It’s time for New York to get into gear and get organized.”
