NYS BPHA LEGISLATIVE CAUCUS RELEASES STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF O’SHAE SIBLEY

NEW YORK, NY (August 8, 2022) – In light of today’s  homegoing services for O’Shae Sibley, members of the NYS Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus released the following statement:

Caucus Chair Assemblymember Michaelle C. Solages, "O'Shae Sibley's life mattered. His presence brought joy and inspiration to his loved ones and everyone who had the privilege of witnessing his performances. Navigating life as a Black man in America is an ongoing challenge, and being an openly proud Black gay man adds another layer of complexity. Nevertheless, here in New York, we have taken a stand. We are not just combating hate; we want to foster an environment where all individuals can live authentically. O'Shae's life reminds us of this commitment, and we must continue to combat fear and hatred with love and a strong sense of community. Together, we shall ensure that his impact endures, inspiring generations to come.”

Senator Jabari Brisport stated, "O’Shae Sibley helped advocate for a world where we could live proudly as gay Black men without fear or degradation; I still believe that we will win that future in the end, and it is a devastating injustice that he won’t get to live safely in it."

Assemblymember Jessica González-Rojas stated, “O’Shae Sibley should still be alive. Gay, Black men should be able to dance and be free. I extend my condolences and solidarity to O’Shae’s family, friends, and community who have been impacted by their murder. My heart hurts with you. We will keep fighting in Albany for legislation and investments that keep our communities safe. And as we grieve O’Shae, we will never stop dancing.”

Assemblymember Tony Simone stated, “O'Shae Sibley's death is evidence that no matter how much progress we make, the LGBTQ+ community still faces discrimination, harassment, and violence at the hands of those who are consumed by hatred and fear. O'Shae was a beautiful person who was doing the same thing he committed his life to: dancing and bringing joy to others - and he was murdered for it because he was gay. The LGBTQ+ community will not be intimidated and will not be erased. We will continue to vogue and never stop dancing. O'Shae deserved better, and we will continue doing the important work to ensure hate crimes like this one never happen again. I am glad that an arrest has been made in this case, and look forward to justice being served."
