CAUCUS RELEASES STATEMENT REGARDING STATE POLICE AGENCY’S DECISION TO REVIEW RELIGIOUS ATTIRE POLICY

“Although the New York State Police agency’s decision to review their policy on religious attire comes later than many had hoped, it is nonetheless a meaningful and important step forward for the Sikh community of New York State.” said Assemblywoman Michaelle C. Solages, Chair of the Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic, and Asian Legislative Caucus. “State Trooper Charanjot Singh Tiwana, and every Sikh individual serving in either law enforcement or the military, should have the right to wear articles of faith while they are in uniform. The diversity of our population is one of the cornerstones of New York, and for us to disregard an individual's religious attire is to disregard their culture. The Sikh Coalition has stated that these articles of faith, which are turbans and beards, will in no way impede their duties as state police officers. If this is evident and can be proven to the New York State Police agency, this policy should undoubtedly be changed. The Caucus will continue to proudly stand with the Sikh community in their continued struggle to wear their religious garb.”
